Homosexuality & the Bible
What does the Bible have to say about homosexual activity?
In this 1-pager, I summarize the opinion that the Bible itself does not condemn homosexuality.
Many Christians today condemn homosexuality because of what they believe the Bible says about it, and this was the position I was raised to hold. Yet after much study, I became convinced that Bible does not condemn homosexuality or queerness.
This 1-pager not an argument that the Bible supports homosexuality, but simply that it does not condemn, nor even speak of committed homosexual unions directly. The authors of the Bible were not discussing what we see today in equitable, consensual, and self-giving homosexual relationships.
I believe the Bible has a lot to say on the topic of sexual ethics, and thus speaks into the ethics of homosexual activity, marriage, sex, etc. Christian sexual values should always include respect of every person’s human dignity, no use of “violence” or “force” or “coercion,” and a caring for the good of the other, wherein sexual love becomes a gift-of-self. Sex ought to be giving and receiving, never forcing and taking.
